A boy begins, 'Sometimes a person needs a quiet place ... to rest your ears from / bells ringing and / whistles shrieking and / grown-ups talking and ... Well, even grown-ups need a quiet place sometimes.' Then he gives some tips on where to find a quiet place.

Under a bush, he tells us that 'you can be a pirate'. Or you can be a timber wolf 'in a green mansion of shadows and sunbeams'. You can discover a lost continent on a beach, be a Pony Express rider in the desert, an ancient cave-dweller in a cavern, a mountain climber 'on the top of the world', or a polar bear in a snowdrift. You can go to the library, or to your own room, where this wise boy tells us you can 'discover the very best quiet place of all - / the one that's always there no matter / where you go or where you stay - / the one inside of you.'

Douglas Wood's words reveal the quiet places illuminated by a child's imagination, while Dan Andreasen's old-fashioned paintings remind us of all the wonders they contain. A Quiet Place is simply delightful.
