E. B. Lewis shines his own light on the well known African-American spiritual, This Little Light of Mine, via beautiful paintings of childen interacting in their communities. Sheet music and the words for the song are included at the back of the book.

It begins with a boy looking at himself in a mirror, affirming 'This little light of mine, / I'm gonna let it shine.' He looks dreamily out a window, hugs his mother, waves to one neighbor and helps another, encourages an unhappy friend ('Won't let no-one blow it out'), plays ball with buddies, eats with his family, and dreams at night.

There's so much hope in this lovely, inspiring song and in these paintings ... share that hope with a child and 'Let it shine, / let it shine, / let it shine.'
