I like the brevity of this Little Book series, which fits well with the amount of time we have nowadays to invest in our personal well-being. Previous health and fitness titles include The Little Book of Healthy Teas and The Little ABs Workout Book, amongst others. Each is meticulously researched and presented in a manageable amount of detail to fit our busy lives.

Dillman tells us that The Little Butt & Thighs Workout Book's home exercise program is designed to 'improve the appearance of your leg and buttock muscles', and to beat cellulite. She advises 'the 80/20 principle' for binge control, discusses how to calculate Daily Calorie Needs, mentions the 'I just exercised so I can eat anything I want' trap (have fallen into that one myself), and suggests that we all need to worry less about issues like fat-burning zones and just 'keep moving'. A Meet Your Muscles chapter introduces location and function of lower-body muscles, and explains the value of 'replacing unhealthy amounts of fat with healthy, calorie-burning muscle.'

Exercises are organized into four mini-workouts, with detailed guidelines (and illustrations) on how to perform them correctly. Most require no equipment, but some use a resistance band, and one advanced routine requires a stability ball. The first workout uses body weight as resistance, and includes squats and lunges. The second focuses on Wide-Leg Moves. The third addresses balance with One-Legged Moves, while the fourth challenges both strength and balance for Killer Legs and Buns. An Appendix gets you started with lower-body stretches, to be performed before and after exercises.

As usual in this series, Erika Dillman mixes solid research and sound common sense to bring us a carefully condensed presentation of her topic. The Little Butt & Thighs Workout Book is a handy resource for a regular home fitness program - and it's just small enough to tuck into a briefcase or a suitcase, for exercise away from home as well.
