This is the first in a Henry and Mudge series. It's a very sweet early chapter book about a small boy named Henry, with no brothers and sisters and 'no friends on his street.' Wisely, his parents agree that he can have a dog, and Henry is particular in his choice of puppies.

Mudge has 'floppy ears' and 'straight fur' and, boy, does he grow! He ends up (at 180 pounds and 3 feet tall) bigger than Henry, and he drools. Mudge accompanies Henry to school, makes Henry feel safe, and sleeps on Henry's bed ('he loved to smell him').

But one day Mudge goes out without Henry. Mudge gets lost ... and 'Henry's heart hurt'. So he goes looking for his big dog. When they find each other, they've both learned an important lesson about love and persistence and staying close.
