I enjoy anything by Sharon Creech. There's always a good message in her writing, but it's how she wends her way to it that makes her stories such fun, and A Fine, Fine School is no exception.

We're introduced to this fine school, with its fine principal, Mr. Keene, and its fine students, including young Tillie. Now Tillie enjoys school but she also likes spending time with her sophisticated dog Beans and with her little brother, whom she's teaching how to skip. So when Mr. Keene, in an excess of keenness, extends school to include Saturday, the entire week-end, holidays, and eventually even the summer break, Tillie has to do something.

The story is cleverly illustrated by Harry Bliss, with cute details like the book entitled 'Ridiculously Difficult Algebra' and a squirrel reading 'NUTS Weekly'. It's a fine, fine tale indeed.
