ikki's father has kept secrets from her since forever. That's because his father kept secrets from him. By the time the truth comes out, we have been treated to a very interesting and well-written story.

airfield County is in the South, a place where the formerly enslaved got some of the land they had labored on for themselves. This is the story of how hard those people had to work to hang onto the land, how some of them weren't able to, and how some just left.
B
ut really the most beautiful part of the story is what it says about working with horses. As Nikki learns what she needs to do - how she should breathe and act around them, we come to realize how intelligent the animals are, and how easy it is to underestimate that.

, another beautiful novel, and I read in the

section that she passed away in 2025. We have lost a wonderful writer.
