The Hitchhikers
, set in the summer of 1976. Leads are Alice and Tom from Seattle, roaming remote Canadian highways in their new RV, after being devastated by a loss.
T
hey meet young pregnant Jenny and Simon (who call themselves Ocean and Blue) at a campground and offer them first dinner and then a ride. It turns into their worst nightmare, after Alice hears on the radio that the young couple is wanted by police, and finds out later that it's for a double homicide!
S
imon is the violent one and Jenny tries to restrain him, but Tom is severely injured. They journey on, prisoners in their own RV, with Alice increasingly worried about Tom who needs hospital care. Though she knows Simon is protecting her and their baby, Jenny feels everything is getting out of control.
S
imon forces Alice to assist in robberies and his violence escalates until he shoots a cop - where will it all end? Stevens fills in the back stories of both Simon and Jenny, making the conclusion an especially apt one.
