The Blue Horse is the third (following The Bitter Past and Shades of Mercy) in Bruce Borgos's Nevada mysteries starring Sheriff Porter Beck. He previously worked overseas in Army Intelligence, and his father was sheriff before him. At this stage in the series, he's involved romantically with state police Detective Charlie Blue Horse.

This episode centers on a very controversial wild horse gather (roundup) of almost fifteen hundred feral horses in the high desert, 'all in the name of public land management.' Helicopters are doing the roundup. Then one goes down and it turns out that its pilot was shot, sending Beck and his chief deputy Tuff into action.

Next, roundup coordinator Jolene Manning is brutally murdered. As the investigation proceeds - and Covid spreads - Beck's sister Brinley is on a wilderness therapy camping trip with troubled teens. When the most difficult one in the group, Rafa, goes missing, she follows him through the desert and into extreme danger.

Of course, these plot threads soon intersect, along with those following a mine and mobsters. Events move quickly in this gripping thriller, with one final shocker at the conclusion. Great series!
