Dead on Target follows Devil's Delight as the thirty-fourth in M.C. Beaton's quirky cozy mystery series starring feisty PI Agatha Raisin. After Beaton's death in 2019, Rod Green successfully continued the series - and is certainly having fun with it.

This time, Agatha is pulled into an archery demonstration (Green explains, in his Foreword, how this happens when Agatha has no time for sports) at the local village fete. DI John Glass, whom she met in the previous episode and who is her latest romantic interest, is there for the morris dancing.

Agatha's friend Charles introduces her to Sir Godfrey Pride, who wants to consult her. But, before he can do so, puppy Ossian leads Agatha to him in the woods. He's been shot by an arrow and his trousers are down. Of course, DCI Wilkes who 'couldn't draw a blob with a crayon' shows up and declares it an accident.

Wilkes is determined to pin the murder on Agatha, but his subordinates have her back as she investigates the victim's family and the Ancombe Archers. Adding color to the cozy are a violent gangster, a kidnapped llama, and a late night graveyard encounter that turns deadly. Agatha always entertains.
