The Spanish Diplomat's Secret follows Peril at the Exposition and Murder in Old Bombay as the third in Nev March's historical mystery series starring Captain Jim O'Trey and his wife Lady Diana. Anglo-Indian Jim is an admirer of Sherlock Holmes.

As this episode opens in the summer of 1894, the O'Treys are on a cruise from Boston to Liverpool. On the first evening, an older Spaniard (a fellow soldier) offers Jim help when he's doubled over the railing with seasickness.

The next day, Jim receives an urgent note from Don Juan Nepomuceno, but the grandee is found murdered in the locked music room before they can meet. The captain begs Jim to investigate, which of course he does with Diana's assistance - and many references to Holmes.

Turns out that Don Juan was the unofficial Spanish ambassador to the United States and the governor of Bilbao, an important man. Another death follows - a suicide? A Spanish treasure chest goes missing and suspects abound.

Jim and Diana do get answers though. Combining his logic and her intuitive understanding, they set a trap and catch a killer, but not without a narrow escape for Jim.
