is the thirty-second in Archer Mayor's beloved Vermont police procedural series. It features the Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI) team led by Joe Gunther, and including one-armed Willy Kunkle and his partner Sammie Martens. Medical examiner Beverly Hillstrom is Joe's romantic interest. Both Beverly's journalist daughter Rachel Reiling and PI Sally Kravitz have assumed increasingly stronger roles in recent episodes, often working together.
his one opens on a young medical student dissecting a corpse - and finding evidence of homicide. The body was that of millionaire Nathan Lyon, believed to have died a natural death nine months before. Lyon had two sons, Rob and Mike, and another (Gene Russell) adopted after his union with the much younger Monica Tardy. They all shared a a 150,000 square foot converted mill. VBI soon learns that Nathan came from Providence, Rhode Island, where he was mobster Nick Bianchi.
e meet two old gangster cousins, Fredo and Eddie, gofers for the Outfit. Eddie had served time for a crime he didn't commit, promised a reward that never came. Now he wants revenge. The story moves back and forth between Eddie's quest for retribution, past events that led to it, and the VBI investigation. At the same time, Sally is hired by Mike Lyon's wife Michelle to investigate an employee with sticky fingers, while Rachel senses a big story and starts digging.
