Joanna Schaffhausen introduces Detective Annalisa Vega as a new series lead in Gone for Good. That's what folk believed of the Lovelorn Killer, who murdered seven Chicago women, posting horrible love letters to them in the media. He was never found.

Twenty years later, another woman is killed with the same MO - Grace Harper was a keen member of an amateur sleuth group, Grave Diggers. She had convinced herself that the serial killer still lives where he hunted, and tried to find him. He found her first.

Detective Annalisa Vega is on the case, as is her ex-husband Nick Carelli, recently returned from Florida. Annalisa knew one of the previous victims (whose son Colin was her boyfriend) well, and her father was a cop at the time and part of the investigations. Grace had consulted him - he advised her she could get hurt.

Annalisa and Nick interview neighbors and Grave Diggers - and learn a little from the latter, as well as from Grace's research. They wonder how the Lovelorn Killer had so much information on his victims - might he be a cop? Then, Annalisa starts getting calls - from the serial killer - and finds he's been in her house.

There are more deaths. It's finally time for Annalisa to meet the perp and rescue a hostage, but the Lovelorn Killer has finally messed with the wrong woman. Yet the story doesn't end there and the grand finale hits Annalisa hard close to home.
