Being a FBI agent in an era that still saw woman in more traditional roles makes this biography refreshing reading. Another good title might be, It Ain't Easy. Indeed, it is not. Traditional male job roles in society are loathe to admit women. Equity laws have helped, but some resistance remains and probably always will. Does this stop women from entering non-traditional professions? I hope not. Particularly where the money is good, women need to be there. And, how too often now are single women supporting families. I smile every time I see a female mechanic.

Sadly, this author had an abusive childhood which resulted in her growing up to be one strong woman. It's easy to see how she could have been beaten down early. Fortunately, a supportive brother came to her aid and even confronted her father who then stopped being abusive – beating abusive.

Stearman's experience with the FBI tells a fascinating tale of how a male society can block out and marginalize women employees. The beatings continued, non-physically. She felt it from the get go, as she was given lesser assignments, jobs the men didn't want. It's easy to see how she might have quit and gone home to a loving husband. He happened to be most supportive, which made all the difference in the world. There are great men in this world.

She succeeded despite many setbacks and, fortunately for us, took notes along the way. Those stories make for good reading. The ongoing fight continues. On 9/22/20, the President suspended all diversity training in America. Equity, thus, remains an ongoing struggle. We fight on.
