Dog Eat Dog follows Silent Bite as the twenty-third in David Rosenfelt's delightful cozy legal mystery series starring lazy lawyer Andy Carpenter (who's also wealthy enough to be able to take his ease); his ex-cop wife Laurie; their adopted son Ricky; their dogs Tara and Sebastian; and an ever growing collection of friends and helpers.

Though formulaic (Andy reluctantly agrees to defend someone in dire trouble, giving in because the accused has demonstrated a love of canines) these episodes are also tons of fun, mainly in the dialogue. This one opens on a home invasion that ends in a double murder. Next, readers join Andy, Laurie and Ricky on a dog walk. They come across Matt Jentzen intervening to stop a brute kicking a dog.

Unfortunately, Matt is wanted in Maine for murder (the home invasion, his blood found at the scene). He's promptly arrested by the police. Matt's half sister Mary Pat (they only got to know each other recently through DNA tests) begs Andy to help. He eventually wends his way to Maine to piece together a defense, helped by a local attorney, Laurie, and Marcus (who follows a drug dealer).

Dog Eat Dog, another engagingly readable offering from David Rosenfelt, ends with a canine addition to the Carpenter family. As always, I look forward to more of all their exploits.
