The series stars Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec. Gamache is happily married, kind, thoughtful and decent, somewhat of a philosopher, and has a strong sense of irony. This sixteenth episode takes the Chief Inspector to Paris, France. His familial entourage is there too - his wife Reine-Marie; his estranged banker son Daniel and family; his very pregnant daughter Annie (due any day now) and her husband Jean-Guy (now working for a multinational engineering firm in Paris). The story opens as Armand meets with his esteemed godfather and mentor, Stephen Horowitz, in the garden of the Musée Rodin (my own favorite spot in Paris). Stephen seems in a sombre mood, reminding Armand of the quote, 'Hell is empty and all the devils are here.' He will not say more, but ends up in a coma that evening, near death after a hit and run. When Armand and Reine-Marie go to Stephen's apartment, they find a corpse, and a scent that suggests a shocking involvement by the authorities. Armand and Jean-Guy find links to the latter's company and Daniel's bank is also implicated. Accusations are made against Stephen of wartime collaboration. While all this goes on, Armand tries again to renew his relationship with Daniel. There are lies and betrayals (some very close to home), extreme danger for Armand and his family (who all have important roles to play), and more deaths before it's all over. All the Devils Are Here is an extraordinary read, the best of Penny's work so far.
