Con Lehane is well known for writing well received novels featuring characters readers have already met in previous books. His 42nd Street Library mystery series stars librarian/sleuth Raymond Ambler, curator of the crime fiction collection. This third episode, Murder Off the Page, focuses on Ambler's good friend, bartender Brian McNulty.

McNulty needs the help of Ambler, his friend, confidante, and sometime advisor when a murder happens. Being such good friends for many years, Raymond cannot hang McNulty out to dry. His investigation becomes even more serious when there's another murder – that of a young woman, well known in the neighborhood drinking establishments, not only for imbibing alcoholic beverages, but also for enticing men to join her in her hotel room.

As this woman is a friend of McNulty's, he is, of course the first suspect. In Murder Off the Page, a tightly written plot with touches of humor makes for a good read.
