Watcher in the Woods follows This Fallen Prey as the fourth entry in Kelley Armstrong's spooky Rockton series. Rockton is an isolated Yukon community, a haven for people running from their pasts.

There is no communication with the outside world, except with the mysterious Council's approval. The Council runs Rockton (and collects fees for those who seek refuge there) but remains distant. The series star is Homicide detective Casey, who moved to Rockton after shooting her drug seller boyfriend. Now she's in a romantic relationship with Sheriff Eric Dalton.

As this episode opens, Eric and Casey have journeyed to Vancouver, hoping to smuggle back Casey's estranged sister April (a physician and neuroscientist) to extract a bullet from Kenny, seriously injured in their last adventure. They return to face a new crisis.

A US Marshal watches from the woods around Rockton. When they find him, he demands that they allow him to take back a fugitive, but won't reveal the person's identity or crime. When he's shot and killed, their problems are compounded. How did he find Rockton in the first place; will he be followed by other law enforcement officials; and who is the new killer in their midst?

As always in an Armstrong story, there's continuous action, conflict between individuals, surprises and red herrings at every turn. What makes this episode even more intriguing is the development of the sibling relationship between Casey and April, with a credible explanation of how it went wrong in the past. Great entertainment!
