Here's a picture book in an urban setting, that's full of hope - Carmela Full of Wishes, by Matt de la Peņa, aptly illustrated by Christian Robinson. It opens on Carmela's birthday, when she's about to venture out with her big brother.

Like all big brothers, he seems to find her a nuisance - at first, anyway. 'He didn't want her tagging along', but Carmela holds her own. She picks a dandelion, but doesn't know how to make a wish with it.

After Carmela helps her brother with the laundry, they continue on. Relating to everything they pass, she imagines something that would make her family's hard life easier.

On the way home, Carmela falls and hurts herself - which is when her brother does something very special, that shows her how to release her wishes. Carmela Full of Wishes is heartwarming.
