A
aron Becker's luminous picture book,
A Stone for Sascha
, conveys without any words a young girl's grief over the loss of a beloved dog, Sascha, as the family heads for summer vacation, camping by the beach.
T
he girl finds a stone on the beach, but where did it come from? What made it? Readers have seen its origins in space and how it existed through civilizations and centuries. Now the girl finds it and lays it on her beloved pet's grave.
T
his is a picture book that young and old can explore together. Its author tells us his intention was '
to encourage readers to discover their own path through the book ... discovering, within the openness of these wordless pages, their own epic story
.'
I
like the fact that it is so open ended and can be read differently by different people and at different ages, but wonder if the approach is perhaps too abstract for young children.
