Can you imagine inheriting a bookstore? I would probably end up in a chair babbling incoherently because I wouldn't know which book to open first.

Miranda Brooks has just been informed that she has inherited her Uncle Billy's bookstore in Los Angeles. Billy, her mother's brother, would appear at odd intervals to take Miranda somewhere magical. Uncle Billy and Miranda's mother had a disagreement and hadn't cleared up the bad feelings after sixteen years! The bookstore is in financial trouble. What to do?

Miranda wants answers to her questions about Billy and her mother. There has always been a sense of mystery about Uncle Billy. Why was he so elusive? Why did the only relatives she had argue? Can she save the bookstore? Does she want to? Will her live-in boyfriend in New York wait for her to decide the best course of action for them?

Should she try to rescue the failing bookstore? It is obvious that author Amy Meyerson has a deep love of reading. Her references to authors and their works could keep you reading for years and not make much of a dent. But you would definitely be well-read and content for being so.

Meyerson blends her knowledge and love of the literary world with a story of a family struggling to keep a secret from the youngest of a small group. The death of a loved one can be very hard from which to recover. We've all had, at one time or another, to rise above the grief that engulfs us. How one family works through the loss in which Miranda finds herself makes the reader consider just how they would handle her situation.

The Bookshop of Yesterdays should be on the top of your to-be-read book list.
