Auralee Wallace's Ring In the Year with Murder is the fourth in her Otter Lake cozy mystery series, set in New Hampshire. Since I hadn't read any of the other episodes I was missing the back story, but still enjoyed it, mainly for the engaging exchanges between two BFFs, Erica and gay Freddie, who've recently started a fledgling PI company with another friend and partner, Rhonda.

The action all happens at a New Year’s Eve Great Gatsby-themed gala at Hemlock Estate. Erica attends in a scarlet flapper dress, and tries to stay upbeat, despite the presence of her ex-boyfriend, Sheriff Grady Forrester, and his new girlfriend, Candace. When Candace's drink is poisoned, everyone (Erica aside) suspects Grady. Despite their differences, she's determined to clear his name, and to protect Candace.

But another mystery pulls reader curiosity through the story, as it opens 'The Morning After', when Erica and Freddie awaken in an elegant bedroom. Erica's wearing a turban - and a handcuff - and the outdoors is festooned in police tape. They spend the rest of the story trying to reconstruct what happened! It's all rather crazy but also lots of fun.
