I remember in my teens walking down the hill from my home to skate on the rough ice of a frozen lake. The children in Paul Harbridge's When the Moon Comes (illustrated by Matt James) do something similar. They head out to enjoy hockey by moonlight.

We see the anticipation mount as they wait for everything to be just right. When the beaver flood has frozen and the moon rises, 'large and ready', they spread the word, 'Tonight's the night.'

These kids look after each other, checking that everyone has warm enough clothes. They clear the snow, which is light and easy to shovel. Then the game is on! 'End to end and around we fly, the long black stripes of our shadows moving across the moonlit ice ... Magic ice.'
