I must admit that my guilty pleasures include books by V.C. Andrews. Though certainly not a literary opus, I find an Andrews' novel to be strictly entertaining, a soap opera in print. Corliss, book one of The Girls Of Spindrift series, did not fail to entertain me.

The concept for this new series is interesting. The Girls Of Spindrift series serves as a set of prequels to the novel Bittersweet Dreams. Corliss is the first young lady featured.

Bearing the burden of brilliance, Corliss does not even come close to fitting in with her peers at high school. This shy loner is seen as a killjoy and is targeted by a particularly nasty clique of girls at school. Becoming the object of their affliction, Corliss is given a spiked drink at a school dance. Much to the clique's delight, Corliss makes a scene and is hauled off to the hospital.

The drama keeps building until Corliss just cannot bring herself to return to school. Perhaps the elite private school, Spindrift, will be her ticket out of her personal hell. Maybe Spindrift will welcome her into a world where she is surrounded by, and accepted by, people like herself.

I think the draw of this new series is that, to some extent, the experiences are universal. Who hasn't been bullied by the nasty clique at school or felt shy and alienated from her peers? The added bonus is all the drama, making the novella read like a fun soap opera without the commercials.
