A hare and a bear share a den, and Hare isn't happy when a sudden, heavy rain keeps them indoors - 'Rain is boring' sighs Hare. 'There, there!' replies Bear.

Hare continues to whine and Bear to comfort (both in verse) in Tim Beiser's There, There. And Bill Slavin's remarkable illustration do an excellent job of conveying their emotions. A patient Bear expresses sympathy for a long time, but eventually he's had enough of Hare's tantrums!

Bear drags Hare outside and shows him how much worse it could be if he were an earthworm squirming through dirt - 'When he meets his own rear end, / He mistakes it for a friend!' This well told tale conveys a valuable lesson in a funny way - and with a perfectly symmetrical ending.
