Grief is not something many middle-graders wish to think about, but it is a reality. Everyone handles it differently, and Mike Revell presents a fantasy-filled way one boy and his father do in Stormwalker.

It has been a year since Owen's mom died. Since then, his dad has been a shadow of what he once was. The only thing keeping Owen afloat is his passion for soccer. Determined to get his father back to his own passion, writing, Owen suggests his dad enroll in some creative therapy. Little does Owen realize that his dad's return to writing will fling him into a sinister world, even darker than his real-life feelings. Owen feels he must complete his dad's story to fix his dad, but it comes at a high price and Owen must choose between his love of soccer and his love for his family.

Stormwalker is really two stories in one. The main story is about Owen and his dad dealing with their grief, but the title comes from the book Owen's dad is writing, the book into which Owen is plunged. It is within these two stories that Revell grows Owen's character and sets him on the journey to healing. With two very different stories, the reader is never confused (at least, not once Owen figures out what is happening) and both plots are easy to follow and engaging, a must for a middle-grade read.

Stormwalker is a unique, fun story with a powerful, healing message. Mike Revell has a style that will easily appeal to today's young readers and readers for years to come.
