Susan Cain wrote Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. Now, Quiet Power, written with Gregory Mone and Erica Moroz addresses what it means to be a younger introvert - in school, extracurricular activities, family life, and friendships. The cartoons interspersed throughout add humor.

The volume opens on a brief Manifesto for Introverts, including, 'There's a word for "people who are in their heads too much": thinkers.' Susan Cain talks about her own quiet childhood in the Introduction; about her growing understanding of the great power of a quiet approach to life; and of her advocacy for the introverted. She defines the terms introvert, extrovert and ambivert (a bit of both), and offers a questionnaire to find out where you fall on the spectrum. She suggests that her book 'will teach you how to use the marvelous qualities and skills you already have. And then ... look out, world!'

Quiet Power is divided into sections on School, Socializing, Hobbies and Home. Cain shares anecdotes of introverts' experiences in all these contexts, as well as reasons for them. For example, 'Introverts' nervous systems react more intensely than extroverts' to social situations as well as to sensory experiences.' She also offers advice on how to handle each environment, e.g. a section on How to Get the Most Out of Social Media; advice to not 'let fear be a thief'; and a discussion on How to Create a Restorative Niche.

I especially appreciated reading about her 'rubber band theory of personality' - as an introvert myself, I've always believed in the importance of constantly stretching limits and leaving my comfort zone. The end of the book includes advice for both teachers and parents in dealing with the introverted. I highly recommend Quiet Power to all ages, introverted and extroverted alike.
