Catherine Ryan Hyde has written many award-winning stories, and this one is a wonderful example of her art. Pete, a white boy living in the south, befriends a black boy, and though the consequences may be foreseen, there is pleasurable and insightful reading in store for anyone who is willing.

Because both boys and a strange dog need medical attention, we meet Dr. Lucy, an original character who refuses to let others sway her from what she thinks is the right thing to do. In the small town where Pete and his new friend live, this is more difficult than it should be. For this reason, Dr. Lucy is content to live on the outskirts of town and to spend most of her time working with animals, who are not that prejudiced.

When Pete and his new friend are seen together, the aftermath causes Dr. Lucy to think even less of her fellow humans. The dilemma of both characters is not only seen from the surface. Hyde has the power of showing her characters' inmost thoughts and feelings, which allows us to get to know truly unique individuals. And the writing is as simple and straightforward as possible, making this another one of her unforgettable stories.
