The featured character in this picture book by Petr Horacek is a penguin, but he's not like the other penguins where he lives at the South Pole. The little fellow is blue and that has created a bit of a quandary since no one has seen a penguin this color before.

Ostracized by the colony, Blue Penguin feels sad and very lonely. His days are filled with emptiness and he begins to have strange dreams. A reoccurring dream is of a white whale and the penguin makes up a song about the whale.

When another penguin hears the haunting song, she asks Blue Penguin to teach her to sing it and soon the two become friends. Of course, one thing leads to another and eventually other members of the colony want to learn the song as well.

The story ends on this happy note as Blue Penguin is now accepted and welcomed by his peers.

Beautifully illustrated by the author, this is a story (about being different and finding acceptance and friendship) that any child three years of age and older will quickly come to appreciate.
