This novel transports the reader to Nepal as the young narrator, Nandu, begins his strange story, 'My mother is an elephant and my father is an old man with one arm. Strange, I know, but true.'

After being abandoned by his real parents, the boy was raised by the head of an elephant stable in the southernmost part of Nepal. It was here where Nandu became deeply attached to elephants and hoped to one day become a handler of the large creatures.

The boy's plans are altered when the government plans to close the facility and Nandu must think of some way of saving his precious animal companions' home. The audacious idea he comes up leads to an exciting adventure that will be fraught with danger but also captivate the youngster lucky enough to discover this unusual story.

Filled with information about Asian elephants and their exotic homeland, What Elephants Know will appeal to any young reader who is curious about foreign cultures and the environment of the jungle. From start to finish this is a book that will totally mesmerize the individual, adult or young person, who opens it and reads a few pages.
