The boarders in the Frampton Hotel all coexist as happily as lonely people can – each with their own quiet stories. But when Miss Pongleton is found murdered on the stairs of Belize Park station, unease set in quickly, each with their own version of what could have happened to her.

Police arrive and more-or-less take over the hotel, which starts hearts fluttering with worry over whether any one of the residents could have been responsible for Miss Pongleton’s murder. Every one of the residents is questioned. Even the terrier Tuppy plays a role.

Though first published in 1934, Murder Underground by Mavis Doriel Hay could easily fit in with today's publications. The English have a way with mysteries that makes them very popular in the States. The author of this intriguing mystery wrote during the Golden Age of British crime fiction. Her three detective novels were well received at that time and are still worth a read.
