I started reading Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series late but was quickly hooked and especially enjoyed last year's heart stopping Destroyer Angel, in which the U.S. park ranger was on her own against vicious kidnappers who held her vacationing friends.

Those same friends appear in Boar Island (Anna's husband Paul is once more left behind in Colorado). Heath Jarrod, who has faced her paraplegia bravely, despairs when her beloved adopted daughter (Anna's goddaughter) Elizabeth attempts suicide - the same Elizabeth who was strong and tough when they were kidnapped. What brought her so low? Intense and pervasive cyber-bullying.

Anna decides that a change of scene is badly needed and persuades Heath to bring her Aunt Gwen and sixteen-year-old Elizabeth to join her at a house on a cliff on Boar Island. Anna has a new post as acting chief ranger at Maine's Acadia National Park. And Heath is more mobile than usual, testing Dem Bones, an electronic exoskeleton that allow her to walk, in a limited fashion.

While this develops, readers meet a Maine park ranger, Denise, who has an obsessive hate for her ex, Peter and his new wife Lily - they have a new baby. Denise's feelings seem extreme and they become even more so - why? Denise meets a battered wife, Paulette, who could be her twin. Denise feels an immediate connection, and decides to sort out both their problems.

As Denise's plans come to fruition, Elizabeth's stalker follows her to Maine. She and Anna both have more than one very close call, but luckily they have locals on their side. And though Denise's actions seem improbable at first, the author provides a credible explanation by the end of the novel. Boar Island is another winner for Nevada Barr.
