In this fourth Darko Dawson adventure set in Ghana, Darko has been promoted to Chief Inspector and then sent off to the country's Ashanti region to investigate murder in a Chinese gold mining operation.

In an area notorious for the illegal exploitation of its gold mines, Obusai has attracted an international group of foreign operators who bankroll the open pit mines and spirit the wealth out of the country. When he arrives at the local police headquarters, Darko finds a lax attitude and ambivalent feelings about the Chinese who seem to control most of the mines.

Although it seems to be an open and shut case, when the arrest of a local mine worker for the murder takes place, Darko realizes it isn't that simple. In fact, the more locals he encounters the more the chief inspector realizes that this is a far more complex case that involves local as well as nation payoffs, jealousy and secret motives that are so deeply hidden it takes quite a while to get to the real perpetrators of the crime.

Rich with local color and a set of likable characters, this series has attracted a wide audience. Author Kwei Quartey, who now resides in Pasadena, California, focuses on the illicit gold business in his native county in this fast moving novel. Previous stories featuring Darko Dawson have been very entertaining but this may be the best of the lot to date. You'll find it a quick read that holds your attention from start to finish.
