Will Robie is a paid government assassin who has lost his finely honed skill. He finds he can no longer carry out his assignments because when it's time to pull the trigger, he flinches.

So, what else does someone do who can no longer work at what they did best? He heads back home to Cantrell, Mississippi and discovers that his father Dan, from whom he was estranged for many years, has been arrested for murder. The man had been a town judge, a pillar of the community, a local attorney. However he refuses to defend himself. Will doesn't know what to believe.

He has a sidekick – Jessica Reel – who wants to help Will investigate his father's case. And he no longer feels comfortable in his hometown. In trying to defend his father, he is met with distrust, skepticism and violence! Hoping to help, he only finds more questions than he started out with.

It could be a case of past transgressions catching up with both father and son. The Guilty is yet another winner for David Baldacci.
