The Squandered is the third in a series by David Putnam, following The Replacements and The Disposables. The plot line continues from one book to the next.

Bruno Johnson and his live-in girlfriend have fled to Costa Rica, taking ten young children with them. These kids needed rescuing from their abusive parents or equally abusive caretakers. Bruno, his father, and Marie felt it was worth it to these kids to rescue them from a lifetime of abuse. If caught, they would be charged with kidnapping!

Bruno's brother sends a letter asking for his help. Marie won't let Bruno go back to the States without her. And so they engage in trying to break Bruno's brother Noble out of jail. Noble's grandchildren have been kidnapped and would be exchanged for $9,000,000 worth of diamonds.

The plot keeps the reader frantically turning pages to see what is going to happen next. Bruno and Marie are people you can really get to like and wish well. Their exploits, however, will set your hair on end. I will tell you no more. Read for yourself.
