It is 1916 and the United States has just entered World War I. The first draft lottery is ready for its initial drawing. There is much dissension between the anti-war faction and pro-war, anti-immigrant patriots. Looks like there might be an uprising by those who don't cotton to the idea of a draft lottery.

If you are a fan of Donis Casey's Alafair Tucker mysteries, you know that Alafair has, in addition to many children and grandchildren, a brother who is a union organizer for the Workers of the World Union. Factions of Boynton, Oklahoma are dead set against his being in the area and he stays low while visiting his sister. Alafair's son enlists, much to her distress. She can't believe that she might lose her son to fight a war that's not on American soil. Knights of Liberty vandalize her son-in-law's farm just because he was born in Germany. He has been a hard-working new citizen, a credit to his family and the community.

Sixteen-year-old Charlie Tucker takes a job at the local brick factory – a vital supplier of bricks for the war effort. Several machine breakdowns slow the progress of this company and the damage is finally thought to be sabotage. Several shift supervisors are murdered. Some men of the town suspect German spies. Others blame the unionists and socialists. But Charlie is sure he knows who is responsible and plans to trap them. And we mustn't forget the old guy in the bowler hat who is hanging around town.

All Men Fear Me is a bit of a departure for Alafair's stories – not so much concerned with her close family but with the affairs of Oklahoma and the World War. It's a good book that gives us a taste of how something this drastic can leave a whole town's residents ready to turn on each other at the drop of a bowler hat.
