London. 1940. War rages in Europe. England is sure they will be invaded in time by Germany. Winston Churchill has been sworn in as Prime Minister. He expects a Blitz to start soon. Everyone hopes the United States will do more than send supplies. Boots on the ground would tip the war in England's favor.

The threat of spies looms large. Ireland is another threat with which to contend. Maggie Hope is ready to do her bit for the country of her birth. Finishing college at the top of her class and possessing a fine mind, she applies to the War Department for a job. She arrives in England to sell an inherited house. Not being able to sell it, she takes in flat mates.

Told her parents were dead, she grew up in the United States, raised by an aunt. However she adjusts to English ways, determined to be of help. One job leads to another and she successfully lands a position working for the Prime Minister himself.

If you are a history buff, this book will give you an overview as to how the English, with their stiff upper lips, survived a horrendous period of years. I have a friend who was a child at the time and remembers the Blitz and the devastation of a proud city.

Mr. Churchill's Secretary by Susan Elia MacNeal is a debut novel. It's a very good book; however the bit with Maggie's father was stretching things a little. I was a child at that time and remember a lot of what happened then. I truly enjoyed this book and look for more from this author.
