hen Tony Hillerman passed away it appeared that his long running series of mysteries featuring Navajo Police Detective Joe Leaphorn would also be at an end. Fortunately, the author's daughter, Anne Hillerman, stepped in and continued the series.
he southwest setting and basic cast of characters has stayed the same and the only change Anne has made thus far is to place the focus on Officer Bernie Manuelito and her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee. Although retired and recovering from a near fatal attack, Leaphorn is still acting as a mentor for Chee and now Bernie too.
Rock With Wings
, the second installment in the new
Leaporn, Chee & Manuelito
series, the couple try to take a short vacation to Monument Valley that quickly turns into a busman's holiday. When a grave is found and then linked to a film company doing a shoot in the area, Jim finds he has to assist the local police with the investigation.
eanwhile, Bernie has to return to Shiprock to deal with a family issue involving her sister. She also stumbles into a curious situation involving a routine traffic stop that escalates into something far more interesting.
s with the previous novels by both Tony and Anne, the Southwestern setting in the Four Corners area is an integral part of the story, as are the personal lives of the key characters.
here's plenty of action here with both Bernie and her husband working separate cases, although some readers might prefer to see these plot strains tied much closer together in the future.
t appears Anne is still trying to find her comfort level in this new venture and it may take a novel or two more before she really settles in. That being said,
Rock With Wings
is still a satisfying read and one that the long time readers of the Joe Leaphorn series Tony Hillerman created will be happy to see continued.
