The only person left alive is a baby less than a year old. She sits among the bodies holding her mother's severed arm. Gabriella cleans up the baby first and calls 911 second. By the time the police arrive the baby has bonded to Gabriella and doesn't want to be touched by anyone else. Gabriella, who has a recent stillbirth in her past, bonds with the infant as well. She is allowed to hold the baby until she arrives at the police station where the child is taken by social services. Police questioning goes on well past Gabriella's midnight deadline while other reporters jump on her story. Since she's now part of the murder investigation, the Bay Herald turns the story over to another reporter. This doesn't stop Gabriella from digging. What reason could anyone have to murder this entire family? Nothing was taken. There wasn't much to take. The baby is put into foster care until her father arrives from Iraq. This won't happen for two weeks and the army won't say why, which is another mystery. Gabriella soon has a suspect, but he has an unbeatable alibi furnished by the United States Army. Despite the gore, the first scene is touching. Gabriella Giovanna is a believable and likable heroine. She's an Italian American suffering from depression, an award winning reporter and a practicing Catholic who loves her job and her fiancé. She's having trouble holding on to both because she can't concentrate on the present while worrying about becoming pregnant, and needing to resolve issues from her past.
