It is going to be a very special day for the child in this picture book. Fritz is going to celebrate his fifth birthday. Imagine his dismay when he looks in the mirror and discovers he looks the same.

Somehow five feels just like four. What's the big deal? Poor Fritz was expecting a little more, like perhaps his baby teeth would wiggle or he might run faster. Alas, he can still count his age using one hand and even with the cake and presents, his birthday does not seem to be that big a deal.

Fritz has just realized that one's age isn't necessarily the way to measure change and maturity. There are other subtle factors involved so patience is necessary when one looks for physical or mental changes.

Does this bother the little boy? Not really, but he has learned a lesson about growing up.

This book will work nicely with a child of four or five and even older children and adults. We all have to be reminded sometimes not to get too locked into chronological age and what it does or doesn't signify.
