Bad Wolf is the second in a bestselling German police procedural series starring Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein to be published in the United States. The first one was Snow White Must Die.

The story is complex with a variety of intriguing characters and subplots. It begins with the discovery of the brutalized corpse of a sixteen-year-old girl, washed up on the riverbank outside Frankfurt. But what is really odd about the case is that the police are unable to identify her.

Essentially this story focuses on a long running international pedophile ring operating at the highest levels of German society, its members ruthlessly using their power to keep their activities secret.

In addition to the detectives themselves (who lead credible and engaging private lives) we follow the musings and exploits of Kilian Rothemund, a highly successful lawyer until he was convicted and jailed as a child molester. There is also ambitious TV show host Hanna Herzmann, dubbed Hanna Heartless by some of her guests, whom she exploits for drama and good ratings.

Hanna is embroiled in these violent events after her psychotherapist calls her with an explosive story. Hanna's daughter Meike, who heartily dislikes her mother, also plays a role, as does Bernd Prinzler, an ex-biker leader who knows Kilian well, and Bernd's wife. And there's a little girl, who rightly fears the bad wolf.

Bad Wolf is an excellent episode in a series that I plan to follow. If you enjoy complex and thought provoking foreign mysteries, dive into this series. You won't be disappointed.
