The Future Falls is the third in Tanya Huff's endearing Enchantment Emporium urban fantasy series. Central to it is the close-knit, witchy Gale family, ruled with iron fists by their magically powerful aunties. Younger Gales - Allie and her close cousin Charlie (a musician) - came into their own in the first two episodes. And Allie adopted Jack, a teen Dragon Lord who is also a Gale.

As The Future Falls opens, Allie is settled in Calgary, raising twins and expecting again. Charlie (Charlotte Marie Gale), who is a Wild Power like Allie's gran Catherine, is avoiding Calgary because she loves Jack and a relationship between them is forbidden. She follows her music. Speaking of Catherine, she was lying on a Florida beach enjoying the scenery and a pina colada when she Saw 'a falling rock'. Turns out a large asteroid will soon destroy most life on the planet - what are the Gales to do?

Unfortunately, none of the powers at their disposal can deal with something off the planet. A sorceror might be able to deal with the big rock, but Jack is untrained and there's no time for him to learn what's needed - or is there? Charlie has to manipulate time in both directions to save the world. And all it takes is a set of 'memorably ugly' teddy bears. The Future Falls is an engrossing read and very, very funny.
