Growing up in a large Italian family, Joe DiMaggio was supposed to be a fisherman like his father. Instead, the youngster dropped out of school to play baseball and joined the San Francisco Seals when he was 17 years old.

The youth made such a name for himself hitting the ball that two years later the New York Yankees signed him and, as the saying goes, the rest is history. His 13 years with the team resulted in a .325 batting average, 361 home run total and three MVP Awards.

Unlike so many pro athletes today, DiMaggio was a quiet, non-assuming professional who didn't like talking to the press. He let his play on the field speak for him and maintained a low profile off the field.

This picture book features a solid introduction to the star's career and will be a good introduction for youngsters who are ready for chapter books and doing their own reading. After this book there are more detailed books that will enable the baseball fan to learn even more about the Yankee Clipper.
