The author spent thirteen years on the London trading floor so she has firsthand knowledge of the pressures and intricate workings of the international investment sector. Campbell puts her insider's view to good use in this novel about a young woman whose personal life becomes enmeshed in her professional one.

Geri Molloy is recovering from a breakup with her boyfriend as the wheels come off with the beginning of the Middle East war of 1991. Felix Mann, a reclusive Hong Kong hedge fund manager, insists he will only work with Geri; hence, she becomes involved in a contentious high stakes takeover.

What follows is a compelling story about a woman trying to regain control of her life and make her way in a business environment dominated by males. There's plenty here about how the international finance game is played and there are a few surprises along the way.

There may be more investment material here than some readers desire but Geri remains the star of the show and you'll find her an intriguing character. This novel was nominated for the prestigious Orange Prize in Great Britain.
