We once again encounter Chief Inspector Andreas Kaldis in Sons of Sparta by Jeffrey Siger. I have grown to like Andreas very much in his previous five mystery novels, and am always glad to see a new one hit the shelves.

This time, Andreas travels from his home base in Athens to the tip of the mountainous Peloponnese. This part of Greece does not attract the tourist trade as does the rest of the country. The area is populated with a fierce people known as the Mani. They have their own code of honor and are known for their vendettas.

Special Crimes Division Detective Yiannis Kouras is summoned to the craggy and stark land by his uncle to help in a new vendetta. When the uncle dies in a suspicious car accident, Kouras learns that the family is about to become rich through the sale of their land by a developer. When the uncle dies, so does the land deal.

Kouras is afraid of the violence and deaths that could erupt. He also realizes that corruption is rampant in Athens' politics, which leads him back to the Mani. Sons of Sparta is not to be missed. I'm sorry now that when I was in Greece, I did not get to this part of the country.
