There are some interesting animal combinations that have become popular in children's picture books. Of course it is hard to top Mo Willem's Piggie and Elephant, but this book by Paul Gude isn't too bad.

Elephant and Giraffe have an interesting relationship because Elephant does ALL the talking. At first Elephant doesn't think Giraffe likes him because the tall animal won't respond to Elephant's friendly overtures. Then Elephant realizes that giraffes aren't big talkers. In fact, they don't make any sound, to speak of, at all.

This relationship is developed in three very short, simple stories and by the picture book's conclusion it looks like Elephant and Giraffe have cemented their friendship.

This would be an excellent picture book to use with a shy child or one who isn't very talkative. Obviously some friendships aren't based on just a lot of conversation and verbal give and take. Also, the text is so easy to follow that I would use this book with a beginning reader as well.

Hopefully there are more Elephant and Giraffe books on the way because this animal odd couple has real possibilities and it speaks and will connect with a different group of youngsters.
