Jamie Zarlin is a Private Investigator in Santa Barbara, California. She is called to investigate what is probably an accident. Skye, a young volunteer, has been found dead in a tank at the Santa Barbara Aquarium. A venomous sea creature seemingly killed him when he tripped and fell into the creature's tank.

Skye's parents don't believe the explanation for such a tragic death and call Jamie to look into their son's demise. Skye's grandfather, a dictatorial grouch, dismisses Jamie but the parents insist that she continue her investigation. Jamie is anxious to prove worthy of the task set her and interrogates all the employees as well as the volunteers.

She uncovers a number of incidents that could relate to the boy's death. Now to prove that Skye was murdered. And find out why!

Black Current by Karen Keskinen is a sleeper. The cover doesn't begin to hint at the action and sleuthing on the pages. The story flows well and the characters live up to their billing. You can really feel the frustration of dealing with Skye's grandfather and understand his parents' grief and inability to accept a too easy explanation for the death of a promising young man.

Keskinen is also the author of Blood Orange, her first novel, which was very well received.
