For Murder at Westminster Abbey, we travel back to the time of redheaded Elizabeth I. In 1559, Elizabeth is about to be crowned Queen of England. All of London will participate in the inauguration ceremonies. Kate Haywood is preparing music to be played for the celebration.

Kate plays and writes music for the lute. Elizabeth always appreciated Kate's father's musical skills and now Kate follows in his footsteps. Lady Mary Everly, almost a ringer for the Queen, is found dead. Murdered? The festivities must go on, no matter what.

But when another redhead is killed, there is some question as to whether the Queen will be safe. She must have adequate protection. Elizabeth entreats Kate to quietly ask questions, whose answers might provide a lead to the murderer.

It's a challenge to keep all the players here straight - the relationships; whether they are legitimate heirs or from the other side of the blanket; and who is sleeping with whom and to what end. Individuals seek to further themselves in the eyes of the royal court; to provide an heir where none have appeared after years of marriage; to catch the eye of someone who can provide a roof and sustenance; or just to cut a swathe through the hangers-on at court.

Murder at Westminster Abbey is a good read if you can keep everyone straight, and is meticulously researched.
