After hoping for a pet for quite a while the narrator of this picture book is given the opportunity to select one. What will it be? Does he want a cat, a dog or perhaps a bird? Maybe.

On the other hand, a jellyfish or a worm might be fun. 'All invertebrates are out. Backbones are in,' says the child's mother. 'Look through phylum Chrodata.'

OK, what about a crocodile to guard the house? 'No reptiles or amphibians; they are too hard to scrub. You just can't bathe a crocodile – it won't fit in our tub,' says the boy's mother.

After running an ostrich, penguin, wildebeest, giraffe and tiger past his mom, to which she said, 'No!', the choice was narrowed down to a Canis lupus familiaris. That furry species seemed to like the boy just fine and it would obviously make the ideal house pet.

This is an educational picture book with information about animal classification and habitat needs. The four pages of learning materials at the back of the book are an added bonus, offering more material about groupings of animals.
