Craig's List posting leads to this novel, which is truly '
not your average love story.
' Elsie Porter meets, falls in love with, marries, and loses Ben, the love of her life, in five months. Chapters about this part of the story are intercut with chapters about what happens afterward.
lsie is supported in her grief by her best friend, and Ana is an ever-patient gift to Elsie. At first, her mother-in-law, Susan, who did not know about Elsie and who only met her after Ben's death, cannot even believe her son was married. How Elsie and Susan come to terms with each other allows us to learn much about grieving and how to move on when that doesn't seem possible.
uthor Reid's first work shows a spritely writing style, maybe a little too spritely at times for this subject. Her second novel will be published in 2014; I'm looking forward to it.
