In his youth, Fulke FitzWarin was asked to play chess with Prince John who threw a tantrum because Fulke was winning. The Prince hit Fulke in the face with the chess board and broke his nose, beginning a rivalry that lasted all their lives.

Many years later, Fulke has been knighted and John rules the land. Fulke hopes to regain his family's land and castle and to complete a mission his father was unable to finish before his death. Though Fulke petitioned the king as the rightful heir, John (still holding a grudge) gave his inheritance to his enemies. Fulke was ultimately named an outlaw by the crown. Fulke FitzWarren was many things - a brother, a loyal and loving husband, a good father to his children, and a hero to those who knew him. But most of all, he was an honorable knight with the courage to stand up for what he believed to be just.

I found this novel well written and excellent, about a man who lived in a time of great unrest and war. Elizabeth Chadwick has weaved fact and fiction into a wonderful tale that kept me glued to its pages all night long. The more I read the more I wanted and I was quite sad when it finally ended.
